Selecting a Topic

Objective: Given a persuasive essay writing prompt the learner will be able to brainstorm 3 possible topics and narrow them down to 1 topic that has well thought out researched reasons.

Attention Getter: Tell student that there is a new rule in the class. Explain that recess has been taken away and they may only use the restroom once a day. Ask students how they feel. Have them give reasons they agree of disagree with the new rule.

Introduction:Tell students that today we will be writing persuasive essays and they will choose topics they feel strongly about and try to convince someone to take their side on the issue. Ask students if they have ever gotten into an argument with someone. Maybe a parent or a sibling or even a classmate. Ask students if they have ever tried to convince their parents that they should buy them something. They are all instances where they had to be persuasive.
